Breaking News: Former UN Secretary-General, Koffi Annan Is Dead

 

Former Secretary-General of the United Nations was 80 years old.

Kofi Annan, who served as secretary general between 1997 and 2006, died Saturday at age 80. The information was confirmed by the Kofi Annan Foundation and the family of the diplomat, who remembers him as “a global statesman”
Kofi Annan, born in Kumasi in present-day Ghana on 8 April 1938, was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001 in a distinction shared with the United Nations itself.

“It is with immense sadness that the Annan family and the Kofi Annan Foundation announce that Kofi Annan, a former Secretary General of the United Nations and Nobel Peace Prize winner, died peacefully on Saturday, August 18, after a short illness,” the statement said. account of the own Annan in Twitter. Pep Guardiola says injured Kevin De Bruyne is 'a big miss' for Manchester City

 


      Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says that injured Kevin De Bruyne will be difficult to replace and will be welcomed back with "open arms".
De Bruyne was an key figure for City last season as they romped to the Premier League title, and then helped Belgium reach the semi-finals at the World Cup.
But he will now be on the sidelines for three months after picking up a knee injury in training on Wednesday.
   Guardiola said: "It is not easy to replace Kevin. We are going to try and do our best without him - and try to be there by the time he returns.
 
De Bruyne helped a brilliant Manchester City side reach the 100-point mark in the Premier League last season
"We will support him and my advice to him is to rest and take the holiday he didn't get this summer.
"He will start to train with the group again when he is ready and we will welcome him with open arms."

Guardiola thinks the relentless demands of the modern game may have played a part in De Bruyne's injury.
"Like the doctor said, he will be out two and half-three months," the manager added.

POLITICS – Current report disclosed that the United Nations (UN) has revealed that cash economy is a major factor fuelling the nefarious activities of the Boko Haram and other terrorist groups in the Lake Chad Basin region.
According to report this was contained in the 22nd Report of the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team, pursuant to resolution 2368 (2017) concerning Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant – ISIL – (Da’esh), Al-Qaida and associated individuals and entities.
UN said: “The predominance in the region of the cash economy, without controls, is conducive to terrorist groups funded by extortion, charitable donations, smuggling, remittances and kidnapping.
“In Nigeria, 111 schoolgirls from the town of Dapchi were kidnapped on 18 February 2018 and released by ISWAP on 21 March 2018 in exchange for a large ransom payment”.
The report was signed by Edmund Fitton-Brown, Coordinator, Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team, who said the report was “comprehensive and independent”, and Kairat Umarov, Chair, Security Council Committee.

Super Eagles forward, Moses Simon, is doubtful for Levante’s Spanish La Liga opening day clash against Real Betis at the Estadio Benito VillamarĂ­n, Sevilla, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Simon, according to a statement published on Levante’s official website, copped a muscular injury in the club’s pre-season friendly against Real Zaragoza last weekend.


“The medical tests carried out on Moses Simon confirmed that the attacker has some muscular discomfort in the quadriceps of the right leg,” reads the statement  “These discomforts came from the game he played against Real Zaragoza at the Stadium of La Romareda during the past weekend. The Nigerian player will perform individualized work in the coming days.”
  The winger recently linked up with Levante from Belgian club, KAA Gent.  He missed out on a place in Nigeria’s squad to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia due to injury.

A video posted online appeared to show the striker sitting in traffic as a number of people, including children, gathered near his car before he drove off.
Liverpool FC said the club made police aware of the video "and the circumstances surrounding its capture” following a discussion with the player.
Merseyside Police tweeted: "We have been made aware of a video believed to show a footballer using a mobile phone whilst driving. This has been passed to the relevant department."

INEC Extends Deadline For Continuous Voter Registration


Commission (INEC) has extended the deadline for the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by two weeks,Naija News Understands.

IN A BID TO STOP UNEMPLOYMENT BUHARI HAS PROMISED AGAIN

File: President Muhammadu Buhari Recall that one of the campaign promises of Buhari in 2015 was to reduce unemployment and increase employment opportunities among the teeming youths. In order to fulfill his promise and reduce the security challenges the country is facing.
        
          Mr President through a statement disclosed by Laolu Akande, Senior Special Assistant to the acting on Media and Publicity, promised free loans to two million Nigerians. Read the full statement below: “In a determined and significant bid to further enlarge its financial inclusion agenda for all Nigerians regardless of social class and economic status, the Buhari administration has launched a new initiative under the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP), called the Trader Moni, which will empower two million petty traders between now and the end of the year. The scheme which was launched last week in Lagos would grant a minimum of 30,000 loans in each State of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory. All together the 2 million mark is expected to be attained on or before the end of this year, with petty traders in Lagos, Kano and Abia States set to be the first round of beneficiaries to draw the collateral free loans. In addition to the 30,000 loans per State, States with larger populations like Lagos and Kano are expected to get more than 30,000 loans. Across the country, especially in the pilot states about 500,000 potential beneficiaries have so far been enumerated. In order to identify the beneficiaries, no less than 4000 enumeration agents have been engaged by the Bank of Industry which is deploying the new scheme. Trader Moni is designed to help petty traders expand their trade through the provision of collateral free loans of N10,000. The loans are repayable within a period of six months. Under the scheme, beneficiaries can get access to a higher facility ranging from N15,000 to N50,000 when they repay N10,000 within the stipulated.

The winger has confirmed his intention to step down from the Super Eagles


After earning his first cap in 2012Chelsea winger Victor Moses has announced his international retirement from Nigeria.The 27-year-old steps down after playing all three matches for Nigeria at World Cup 2018 in Russia, with the Super Eagles eliminated in the group stage.Moses ends his international career with 37 caps and 12 goals. He played in two World Cups, and also helped the Super Eagles lift the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations. 

 The Chelsea man announced his international retirement with a post on Twitter. "I have experienced some of the best moments of my life wearing the Super Eagles shirt and have memories with me that will last  a lifetime," Moses said.
 "However I feel that now is the right time to step away in order to be able to focus fully on club career and my young family as well as to allow the next generation of Super Eagle stars the opportunity to step up and to flourish."Moses has come off the bench in both of Chelsea's games so far this season: a Community Shield defeat to Man City and a Premier League win at Huddersfield
